Thumbnail Toolz

Developed by PATAZ Animation for real-world production, Thumbnail Toolz is a simple but powerful utility addon that provides essential tools for managing asset thumbnails directly within the Asset Browser.

You can find our full collection of workflow-enhancing Blender Tools here.

Features

  • Copy Thumbnail: Easily copy the thumbnail from one local asset to another. This is perfect for creating consistent visuals for different versions of an asset or for applying a custom thumbnail to multiple items.
  • Export Thumbnail: Save any local asset's thumbnail as a high-quality .png file for use in documentation, websites, or personal libraries.

How to Use

Once installed, the addon's panel will appear in the Asset Browser.

  1. Open an Asset Browser window.
  2. Press N to open the sidebar.

Copy Thumbnail

To copy a thumbnail from a source asset to a target asset:

  1. In the Asset Browser, first click on the asset you want to copy the thumbnail from (the source).
  2. While holding SHIFT, click on the asset you want to copy the thumbnail to (the target).
  3. Click the Copy Selected to Active button in the Thumbnail Toolz panel.

Export Thumbnail

To save an asset's thumbnail to your computer:

  1. Click on the asset whose thumbnail you want to save.
  2. Click the Save Thumbnail to Disk button.
  3. A file browser will open, allowing you to choose a location and name for the exported .png file.

Limitations

  • Current File Only: Due to limitations in Blender's Python API, the addon can only operate on assets that are located in the "Current File" asset library. It cannot access thumbnail data for assets in external user libraries.

Save Thumbnail to Disk: Need to export an asset's thumbnail for external use? Now you can with a single click, saving it directly to your chosen location as a PNG image.

We believe these tools will significantly enhance your experience in the Asset Browser. Give "Thumbnail Toolz" a try and let us know what you think!
