Jumping between markers all the time?

Blender doesn't give you a quick way to jump to timeline markers by keyboard. Marker Shortcuts is a lightweight addon that lets you assign custom shortcut strings to your markers and jump to them in two keystrokes.

How it works

Jumping to a marker takes two steps:

  1. Press your trigger key: this enter a modal state, now expecting a Marker shortcuts
  2. Tap the marker shortcut for the marker you want
  3. The playhead jumps after the timeout (which can be adjusted in the addon settings) or when you press Enter. Press Esc to cancel.

Example: Trigger modal state with Shift+M, then rapidly type 3 to jump to my "End" Marker which shortcut has been set to 3.

How to setup Marker shortcuts

To assign a shortcut to a desired marker, either go to:

  • Addon preferences
  • Marker menu in animation editors: Dope Sheet, Graph Editor, NLA Editor, and Video Sequencer

Why a 2-click-modal system rather than just keymaps?

Blender's keymap system is powerful but fragile, so dealing with a lot of Markers can increase the chance to mess up your keyconfig. Also, the modal listener lets you write complex full strings shortcuts:

  • multi-digit numbers e.g 10
  • multi-character names, e.g Seq10
  • full words, e.g Start

Bulk tools

  • Auto Numbering Setup: prefixes markers with 1., 2., 3.… and assigns matching numeric shortcuts
  • Remove Prefixes: strips those number prefixes from marker names
  • Marker to Shortcut: assigns Marker names as their shortcuts (works best with concise marker names like Intro, Seq1, End, etc
  • Delete All Shortcuts: clears every assigned shortcut in all scenes

Additional notes

  • Markers are handled on a Scene level.
  • I'd personally stick to the Timeline Editors Keymaps to avoid conflict between your master Trigger keymap and other operators, but as its name suggests, it has the disadvantage to work only in the context of the NLA, Graph, Sequencer and Dopesheet Editors.
